pigeon haatTo give the venture a truly real shape, a day-long ‘Kobutor Haat’ or pigeon bazaar took place at city’s Mirpur-14 Bot Tola Saturday for the first time ever.
Bangladesh Fancy Pigeon Breeders’ Association (BFPBA) and Bottola Hat jointly organised the function that were buzzing with many pigeon lovers.
Shaikh Siraj, Chief of News of Channel i, inaugurated the event.
He said, “Socio-economic condition can easily be developed rearing pigeon. Small investment on this trade can bring success for unemployed youths. But they have to have ‘wish’.”
He, however, urged the government to lift the ban of export and import of pigeon. “Lifting of ban will encourage the youths to be self-reliant by rearing pigeon,” he added.
Quraishi Mohammed Tanvir Hasan, general secretary of BFPBA, said, “Pigeon has great value in international market. Germany and the Netherlands are earning foreign currency exporting pigeon.”
“We are just lagging behind in this sector,” he added.
At least 50 pigeon sellers showed up in the hat with their wide variety of pigeons.
One pigeon seller Pankaj from capital’s Kafrul said, “I started rearing pigeon out of passion which has turned out to be a commercial venture now.” He has a total of 30 pairs of pigeons. Of which, he gets 15 pairs of baby pigeons.
“Side by side with my service, I am earning a good amount of money by selling the baby birds,” he added.
When asked about the price of big-size ‘Bokhara’ pigeon, owner of this variety Shuvo said, “You have to spend around Tk 150 thousand to Tk 200 thousand to buy pigeon of this variety.”
He, however, said the maintenance of the one pair of pigeon of this variety does not take money much. Tk 300 per month is enough for maintaining one pair of pigeons.
Of other varieties, Blue Potter and Stretcher of Germany cost Tk 70,000 and Tk 40,000 respectively.
Besides, prices of other pigeon varieties of Bangladesh and India hover around Tk 500 to Tk 20,000.
Apart from the exhibition, some of the pigeons were brought for sale. Of those, the price of the most expensive pigeon Magpie Potter was fixed at Tk 20,000.
Ruhul Amin Khokon, general secretary of Bottola Pigeon Hat, said, “There is no pigeon hat other than city’s Thatharibazar.”website:www.daily- sun.com
