Hi,I am Zawwad
Ul Sami
DHAKA, Dec 1 (2012) - It was around 9:30 am. As it was a winter morning, weather
was a bit foggy. But already a crowd was built on the footpath behind the
Thatari Bazar chicken Market in the city.
Most in the crowd were spirited youths between the ages of 12 and 30 with many of them holding cages made of bamboo and iron. Some of them were holding paper bags having tiny holes in them, making tinier beaks and heads of the live creatures visible from within.
In a minute or two it became conspicuous that the interest there was totally for pigeons, especially for the pet ones. They were not for delicacy, they were those species for which some people have tremendous passion.
Pigeon enthusiasts throng the footpath for selling or buying pigeons of different species and sizes and colours. Every Friday morning a makeshift pigeon market sits there.
People from all over the city, sometimes from other districts come there to buy or sell their pigeons. There are pigeons that are different not only in looks but also in names -- Giribaz, Lokka, Cuina, Homer, Shobji, Bagha, Racer, and Helmet. Prices of pigeons also vary depending on their breed.
A pair of Ghola is sold at Taka 200 while that of a Strasser pair for Taka 40,000 to 50,000.
When asked why he came to this market, Roni, 23, a pigeon lover from city's Bongshal area, told BSS that he could see different kinds of pigeons and learn about them in this market. He himself also brought three pairs of Giribaj to sell. He expects to fetch Taka 3,000 for the pairs.
Abul Miah, 55, a pigeon trader, brought two pairs of Shiraji. He is asking Taka 10,000 for them. He said he is a regular trader here for two years. He buys pigeons from Dhamrai in Dhaka district and brings them to sell in this market.
By talking with people like Roni and Abul Mia, we got an idea about various kinds of pigeons and their prices.
In this market, a pair of Khaki usually sells at Taka 800- 1000, Red Ghola Taka 800-1000, Cuina Taka 800-1000, Sulli/Bagha Taka 800-1,000, Jira Ghola Taka 2,000-2,500, Zekobin Taka 3,000- 4,000, Black Lokka Taka 3,000-4,000, Short Face Taka 3,000-4,000, White Lokka Taka 4,000-5,000, Homer Taka 4,000- 5,000, Shating Taka 4,000-5,000, Red Helmet Taka 5,000-6,000, Chinese Owl Taka
